I recently visited .com and surprisingly came across some weird behavior on the website. I attempted to an article and this windows popped up:

Knowing better I proceeded to close the the pop-up window, a little nervous of what just happened (I am running Windows XP after all). After that I noticed there was a new ad on the screen for a product called “AntiVirus 2009″. After a little research I found out the following: Antivirus 2009 is a new rogue anti- program from the same family as Antivirus 2008 and Doctor Antivirus . Antivirus 2009 is installed and advertised through the use of misleading web sites that attempt to make you think your computer is infected with a variety of . Once installed, Antivirus 2009 will scan your computer and list a variety of fake infections that can’t be removed unless you first purchase the software. These infections are fake, though, and only being shown to scare you into purchasing the software. (read more).

I thoroughly scanned my PC and checked for any intrusions or infections. None were to be found, the PCis running fine. I would like find out if any other people have experience this weird behavior and have seen these ads on the . Please leave a comment with your experiences.

  2. I have noticed the same popups / spyware periodically on digg. It made me pause and wonder why a legitimate site would be doling this stuff out.
