It is difficult nowadays to think of the internet without thinking of Google. Since its inception, it has become the premier internet search engine to the point that Merriam Webster dictionary has recognized its name as a verb, meaning “to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet.” It is a site that has become integrally associated with going online.
Google was started as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin who were at the time two Ph. D candidates at Stanford University. They proposed to create a search engine that came up with webpage search results differently than other current search engine platforms. Rather than claiming the most accurate pages were the ones that contained the search term the most on their page, their new search engine would compile search results based on their relationships with other web pages. They first built up the site using Stanford’s domain in 1996. It wasn’t until 1997 that google.com was officially registered.
Since then, Google has grown and become an innovative forefront for internet technology. In 2000, advertisements began being sold associated with keywords entered into Google’s search engine. In 2001, PageRank was introduced, ranking the importance of a website based on its interaction with similar websites, thereby introducing links between websites by interest and popularity. Since then, Google has introduced a plethora of new applications, such as Google Video, Google Maps, and Gmail.
Google’s growth and influence on the World Wide Web has made it in itself a useful tool for advertising and marketing. Because so many people and businesses alike use Google to search for anything from medical advice to potential clients, vying for the first page of a Google search result has become part of a marketing strategy through Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
Google continues to be one of the most influential search engines on the planet. Its ideas and innovations have become precedents for other websites and companies around it. With this in mind, it is important not only observe Google as a social and cultural phenomenon, but also as a role model for future businesses and like-minded individuals.
