Search Engines and Internet Directories : What’s the Difference?

A search engine is run by an installed software program, often called a spider or a robot, that searches the Internet for new or updated web pages. The programs will scan URLs until they have covered every site on the Internet. A search engine spider records the full text of every page it finds, including a website’s sub-pages. Once all the information has been recorded, the spider will then search all of the external links that are on the page.
External links are the best way to direct a search engine spider to your page. Once a search engine has found your page, it will continue to revisit it to update the information that it has recorded.
After a search engine has found your page, it uses a formula to rank it. Each search engine has a different ranking formula. For example, some sites use popularity as the most important criteria in ranking while others use meta tags in ranking. Because ranking formulas do vary from site to site, search results will also vary from site to site.
Internet directories are very different from search engines. Internet directories do not use an automated software program to rank websites. You need to submit your webpage to an Internet directory and it will then be indexed by people who decide whether or not to include it in the directory. Often directories have stringent guidelines that have to be met before a site can be included.
The websites that are in Internet directories are organized in subject categories and are mainly intended for browsing, allowing the searcher to find a subject hierarchy when searching for information. Because Internet directories do not scan the entire Internet, the databases are much smaller, yet much more focused, than the databases in search engines.
