Selling goods or services over the internet is different from other ways of marketing your business. Whether you are writing an advertisement for the internet or are writing content for your website, it’s very important to know the ins and outs of writing copy for the internet. Here’s some proven methods to live by:
1. Don’t make your Ad look like Advertising
We all can agree that internet advertising can be as welcome as a gnat buzzing around your ear. Because of intense saturation of internet ads, most people don’t pay attention to ads that read like, well-ads. To get around this, instead write something that will be useful and valuable for your customer to read. A sales pitch or plug can be carefully weaved into the content, as long as the content is legitimate and helpful.
Another tip: offer something free in return for gaining a customer into your marketing net, or offer a steeply discounted product.
2. Make your Customers Feel Safe: Build Tons of Credibility
Ordering goods or services on the internet is a lot different than buying something in person, or even over the phone. In this world of internet scams, identity theft and fraud, customers need to feel secure before they will be convinced to buy over the internet.
The way to counter this skepticism is to build up your credibility by providing all the proof that you can. Some tips:
- Provide photos of you and/or your employees.
- Use your full name in your ad or web page content.
- Provide customer testimonials on your website.
- Offer a money back guarantee.
- Mention any obvious doubts or suspicions you think the average consumer would have about your product, and counter that with facts that negate them.
3. Play up Customer Service
Here is where you get your chance to really shine above your competitors. Good customer service is always welcome and necessary. Make sure your website and advertising copy tells why your customer service is superior. Why are you different? Focus on your customer-satisfaction driven return policies and guarantees, as well as other aspects that make your customer service stand out.
Testimonials work well in this context as well. Write about a customer who had a problem with your product/service and then tell how the problem was resolved quickly and to their delight.
4. Optimize your Website for the Search Engines
The popularity of search engines like Google and Yahoo has created an entirely new niche known as Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. Learn about keywords and link building, or hire an expert to handle this very important step. By optimizing your website’s content, your site will be ranked higher on the search engine’s lists, garnering you more traffic. And if you’ve followed the copywriting guidelines outlined here, more traffic on your site will equate to more sales.
